The series is at first set in C.E. 2149, once overspill and declining air quality threatens all life on Earth. once scientists discover a temporal rift allowing human transmission they initiate a series of "pilgrimages" to a parallel "time stream" resembling Earth's Cretaceous.The series focuses totally on officer James 'Jim' Claude Shannon, his married woman Elisabeth, and their 3 youngsters bait, Maddy, and Zoë, as they be part of the colony there,named "Terra Nova" for "New Earth" or "New World" in Latin.
According to the story's premise, Elisabeth Claude Shannon is chosen for her medical experience, and her youngsters together with her. Her husband, captive for violating social control by harbouring a 3rd kid and assaulting a political candidate agent to shield his young female offspring, stows away to hitch them, and eventually convinces the colony's leader, Commander Nathaniel Taylor, that his own police experience is of use to the administration. The colony places nominal stress on environmental responsibility.
